ASLTIP Calls for Equal Recognition of Independent SLT Reports in EHCPs
The Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP) has released a statement addressing a pressing issue: some local authorities are refusing to consider reports by independent Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) as part of the Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) process.
ASLTIP emphasises that all practising SLTs in the UK meet the same professional standards. They hold degree-level qualifications, are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and adhere to HCPC’s ethical and professional standards. Additionally, all ASLTIP members are registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and have significant postgraduate experience.
The association highlights that the SEND Code of Practice (2015) requires local authorities to consider all professional evidence when creating an EHCP. The Equalities Act (2010) also mandates fair access to support for children and young people, without discrimination.
ASLTIP calls on local authorities to comply with these legal obligations and ensure unbiased consideration of independent SLT reports in EHCPs, to support the best outcomes for children and young people.
