Our story

Our Story

Starting small

ASLTIP began in 1989 when a small group of independent speech and language therapists came together to create something they couldn’t find: connection. At the time, there was no directory, no network, and little recognition for those working outside the NHS. Just a few colleagues supporting each other in a profession that didn’t yet make space for independent ways of working.

A culture that’s hard to replicate

That spirit of collaboration over competition still defines who we are. You’ll find it most clearly in our local groups. These regional communities offer something genuinely rare: a space where members share knowledge openly, reflect on challenges, and build each other up. Therapists help each other with clinical dilemmas, business ideas, and day-to-day questions. Some groups are small and informal, others are large and well-established. What matters is that they are grounded in trust and generosity.

Recognised, but still member-led

As the profession has evolved, so has ASLTIP. We’ve gone from a small support network to a recognised voice for independent speech and language therapists in the UK. Today, we work alongside the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to represent the independent sector at a national level. As a result, we’re often invited to contribute to guidance, consultations, and discussions that shape the future of the profession.

Through all of this, we’ve remained member-led. Our board is made up of practising speech and language therapists. Our volunteers run local groups, share their expertise, and keep the spirit of ASLTIP alive across the UK.

In 2024, we lost our former Chair, Sarah Buckley. She led with warmth and clarity, and she deeply understood the value of independent practice. Her influence still shapes the organisation, and she remains part of our story.

What began as a small idea is now something respected and relied on — by members, families, professionals, and partners.
