FAQs

Some frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some common questions about finding and working with an independent speech and language therapist through ASLTIP.

The cost of speech and language therapy can vary. ASLTIP therapists work independently, so they set their own fees based on the support they offer and how therapy is delivered.

Before your first appointment, your therapist should clearly explain:

  • the cost of assessments and therapy sessions
  • any travel or additional charges
  • cancellation and payment terms
  • Things that can affect cost include whether sessions are in person or online, how often sessions take place, and whether additional work is needed, such as reports or liaison with other professionals.

ASLTIP is a not for profit organisation. We do not charge referral fees or take commission. You contact therapists directly and agree fees with them, with no hidden costs.

ASLTIP therapists work in a range of settings, depending on the support you’re looking for and what works best for you. This may include:

  • clinics and independent practices
  • homes and care settings
  • schools and nurseries (privately or under contract)
  • hospitals and rehabilitation centres
  • online, offering flexible support wherever you are

Therapists tailor their approach to suit you and your individual circumstances, and many work across more than one setting.

ASLTIP therapists support people with a wide range of communication, eating and drinking, and interaction needs, across all ages.

Some people come to us knowing the words they’ve been given by a professional. Others just know what’s feeling difficult right now. Both are absolutely fine.

To make it easier to find the right therapist, we group therapists’ experience in two ways:

  • by common reasons people seek support, written in plain English
  • by a full A–Z list of areas of experience, for those who want or need more detail

You don’t need to know the “right” term to get started. The search will guide you, and you can explore areas of experience in more detail if that’s helpful.

All ASLTIP members are:

  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Members of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Committed to HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and the RCSLT Code of Practice
  • Regularly updating their skills through professional development and supervision

If your therapist feels your needs require specialist support beyond their expertise, they will refer you to the right professional.

Your privacy matters. ASLTIP therapists follow UK data protection laws including GDPR. They store your information securely and keep it confidential.

You have the right to access your records and understand how your data is used. More Information

While ASLTIP therapists work independently, they are part of a supportive professional community. This means they:

This network helps ensure high quality, independent therapy across the UK.

Your experience matters. If you have concerns or feel your needs aren’t being met:

  • Speak openly with your therapist — many issues can be resolved by talking directly.
  • Request a review or seek a second opinion from another ASLTIP member.
  • Contact ASLTIP for guidance and support if you need help raising concerns.
  • For formal complaints, contact the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which regulates professional conduct.

Remember, your wellbeing is the priority. Getting help early can make a difference
