Hi Susannah,
I would have thought that finding a group which relates to this man’s interests and where he would find like minded people might be most appropriate. Dungeons and Dragons and other role play games rely very much on discussion and listening to verbal descriptions so might be accessible if this is something that interests him. Maybe he has an interest in history and there is a local society that gives talks. The value in starting from an interest focused, strengths based perspective I think holds true whether the autistic person is 6 or 60. Friendships will naturally follow if we seek out kindred spirits; it’s just working out who and where those people are!
