Reply To: What do you do about travel time?

Jan Baerselman

It is encouraging to see that over the 10 years that I’ve been independent, SLTs appear to have become way more clued-up on business & finance – and therefore profit margins. It takes a while to understand that what you charge isn’t what you earn. It’s possible to earn around 1/4 to 1/3 of what you charge per hour (as you have to add up all the night time record keeping, Sunday email-replying, evening training-prep) – and that’s only if you don’t do lots of extra, unpaid work – like undercharging for travel. We were paid for travel time in our NHS/employed jobs so it’s heartening to see many of us  are carefully considering the cost impact of travelling to clients. That said, I’m not sure I’ve got it quite right but changing systems is really time-consuming!
